Trek to Everest Base Camp

Saturday. April 26 – TREK TO KUMJUNG (12,400 ft)

Tour schedule: An easy day today as we enjoy a leisurely breakfast before taking a two hours hike to our next location, the scenic village of Kumjung. It is here that Ed Hillary started his first school for the Sherpa community and this is also the site of the Kunde Hospital. Our lodge here is built to offer magnificent views of Mt. Amadablam.

some photos from the day's trek - journal entries to follow:

Mike and Soo Wai on the 'staircase"

the last 15 min of today's trek was through a rhododendron forest with moss covered rocks

We spent the afternoon chatting with David about mountain climbing, river rafting, filming, the Sherpa people. Soon after dark, David showed us some recent movie clips of Everest that he has been working on. From his work on "Glacier Works" we saw a few high resolution imagery of Khumbhu (Everest) and the Baltoro (K2) glaciers. The interactive imagery with millions of pixels, allows one to zoom in and even be able to see hikers on the trail.

For more on Glacier Works.
